Welcome to GPSy™ -- a Macintosh based Global Positioning System (GPS) communications program. GPSy™ connects to compatible GPS units, Loran-C, and other navigational units and displays current coordinates (latitude/longitude & UTM), altitude, bearing, heading, speed over ground, velocity made good, distance to go, current waypoint, GPS satellite data, and more. GPSy can use commercial CD-ROM databases, user-scanned maps, and Internet map servers for a real-time navigational display.

Features
GPSy can present positional information in Degrees°Minutes'Seconds (41°18'56"N), decimal degrees (eg. 41.315550°N), degrees and decimal minutes (41.18.933°N), UTM (1000 m. or 10,000m grid); Earth Centered/Earth Fixed (ECEF) X, Y, Z; French Grads; Australian Map Grid (AMG); German Grid (Gauss-Krüger); Irish Transverse Mercator; Maidenhead Grid; Military Grid Reference System (MGRS); British National Grid; New Zealand Map Grid; Swedish Grid; or Swiss Grid. You can choose both a primary and secondary coordinate system and primary and secondary geodetic datums with the preferences panel. You can select the datum used from a list of 124. Both degree and gradian displays are allowed with selection between magnetic north and true north.
If the navigational unit is in a stable location, GPSy can calculate the average static position over time. This will cancel the cumulative effects of the government-induced Selective Availability (SA). You will need at least an hour of calculating the average in order to cancel out the effects. You can reach about a 10-meter (30 foot) static solution using this option. The length of the data sample; sample size n; standard deviation; and the average dilution of precision (DOP) are also calculated, thus giving you an index into the sample accuracy.
GPSyLink provides an optional seamless connection to DeLorme's StreetAtlas® 3.0 and 4.0 (United States); iPC MapFan II (Japan); and Internet Map Servers. You have a moving map display with advanced control features such as control over zoom in/out; magnitude; map features; and update rate -- all from within GPSy. DeLorme's 12-channel low-cost, high-performance GPS unit, the Tripmate®, is also fully supported.
GPSyLink provides a data link out via AppleEvent support. The enclosed AppleScript file shows how to extact data from GPSy.
GPSy can log raw NMEA data to a text file which is compatible with most Macintosh word processors or data analysis programs. GPSy can later playback the recorded NMEA data as if it were occuring in real-time. Comments and playback speed are part of the log feature set. Hit <return> to place a log note entry, and view the comments using the "Additional Device Data" window (command-4).
GPSy can control high-end GPS units such as the Ashtec SCA-12 through its exclusive "Send GPS/NMEA Command" feature. This feature also allows you to connect to remote GPS units hooked up via modem; Riccochet; or other connection means. Command support for DeLorme Tripmate and Starlink Differential GPS beacons is also included.
GPSy can use the Mac's text-to-speech feature. Simply open up any navigational window and hit <SHIFT>-1, <SHIFT>-2, or <SHIFT>-3 or the space-key in order to speak the current location, track, or heading.
GPSy can convert between SI (metric) and imperial units in the display panels. If the NMEA unit sends magnetic declination information (or enough data to calculate declination), then GPSy can also convert between true and magnetic north. See the Preferences panel for more options.
GPSy can synchronize your Macintosh system clock to the GPS time standard. The GPS system contains an extremely high accuracy clock. This is with two caveats: 1) most portable GPS units do not have high-accuracy serial ports and might delay output of the needed timing sentences; 2) the Macintosh system clock can only be set to 1 second accuracy. However, GPSy allows for a small correctional factor to be added to the time synchronization which allays these two problems.
GPSy system requirements are:
• Any 68020 or above Macintosh (or PowerPC)
• System 7.5.5 or above required; MacOS 8 compatible; System 7.6 or MacOS 8.1 recommended.
QuickTime 3.02 must be installed for full map support.
